e-AGRIKultura Centers…. Konek-ted!

The six e-AGRIKultura centers, located and housed in the six (6) in key cooperatives of PATSARRD-assisted provinces are now equipped to connect globally with the successful installation of satellite internets early this year. Farmers are now taking advantage on the opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge in agri-business at the same time enjoy the benefits of communicating easily via the internet.

The technical teams from the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) and the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), with the assistance of service provider Dream VSAT, made possible the connection of the cooperatives to the world wide web as part of the initiative of the e-AGRIKultura project to strengthen the established e-community centers by ensuring access to agricultural information and social services online of farmers, fisherfolk, and agri-business owners. E-AGRIKultura is one of the featured projects under the K-AgriNet Program.

Tag-osip-El Progreso Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries’ Multipurpose Cooperative in Buruanga, Aklan was the first e-AGRIKultura site to be e-connected. Installation was done days after the province was devastated by a strong typhoon “Seniang” late last year. In Tubigon, Bohol, Libertad Multi-Purpose Cooperative made use of bamboo fence to temporarily hold the parabolic satellite dish. A site assessment of the Department of Agrarian Reform Municipal (DARMO) and KALAHI Farmers Center (KFC) was also conducted by the team in preparation for the proposed interconnection of e-AGRIKultura centers, KFCs, DARMO, and other key agencies involved in the e-AGRIKultura project and the K-AgriNet program.

In Kinangay Sur Agrarian Reform Cooperative (KINSARCO) in Clarin, Misamis Occidental, the coop members eagerly assisted the team in securing the satellite dish on the roof of the center which is the safest area to position the equipment. The dish was welded on the metal truss to ensure it can withstand a strong breeze.

The rest of the cooperatives namely Los Arcos Multi-Purpose Cooperative (LAMPCO), located at a very remote part in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur, Cabacungan Primary Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Allen, Northern Samar, and Alipao Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Alegria , Surigao del Norte were the easiest to be connected since their locations were easily accessible to the GILAT technology.

Orientations and briefings on internet use and network management were also conducted by DAP after each installation to ensure that coop members and people in the community could benefit from the initiative of the e-AGRIKultura project to make information, technology, and other agricultural innovative available to them.
